Pokemon Topsun cards and stickers explained

Topsun is two products wearing one name, and a third nobody separates from them. The shape in your hand settles which is which before anything printed on it does.

The archive holds NO photograph of a Topsun battle card and no photograph of a 1995 stat-table card in its own photo rows; both exist only as marketplace photographs read for research and deliberately not copied into the repo. So every battle-card and 1995-card claim in this article is text-cited to the research record and carries no plate. The article says so on the page.

Top-Seika, a Japanese confectioner, put Pokemon on two quite different things in the 1990s, and a third sits so close to one that sellers merge them. The stickers are square peel-and-stick seals in gum packs from 1997 and have a catalogue here; the cards are a separate 1997 line printing a numbered Pokemon over battle art; the third is a set of 1995 cards with a stat table on the front. [1] [4] [5] Before anything printed, the shape sorts all three: landscape with a metallic band is the 1997 card, portrait with a cream border and a stat table is the 1995 card, and fifty millimetres square with a peelable backing is a seal. The 1997 cards are packaged as card gum, and nothing prints VS, which is only a collector name for the two-Pokemon artwork. Two front designs share one number series, a hundred metallic-band cards and fifty gold-framed anime cards on the same green back, and a hundred and fifty number-to-name bindings have been read off photographs. [16] [19] [20] The set is at least 151, not the 150 everyone trades: a No.151 Mew exists on prism stock, but no wrapper printing a total has been seen, so the denominator stays open. [22] [23] The prism cards are not a foil reprint, since prism No.150 pairs Mewtwo with a different second Pokemon than the non-prism. [24] [25]

Four cards sell as errors; this archive publishes one, No.070, which prints Weepinbell’s number band and classification over an otherwise complete Bellsprout, and holds three that one angled photograph cannot establish. [26] [28] The 1995 cards are a separate portrait set of 150 with a full stat table and a 1995 Nintendo, Creatures and GAME FREAK credit on the card itself. Blue-back and green-back copies are one set in two inks, settled by four matched pairs; which came first is a market habit, not a fact on the card, so the colour is a variant and never a sequence. The Topsun and Toppu wordmarks mostly date the era, the longer mark earlier and the shortened Toppu mark from autumn 1998, but on the 1997 cards the mark is per-card and not a set boundary, so it must not split them into two products. [11] [15] What stays open is the denominator, whether the gold-framed front belongs to this product or a sibling, and a hundred and fifteen rows with no legible stats. There is no price here for any Topsun product, and every card was read from marketplace photographs used for identification only. [31] [33] [40]

What is Pokemon Topsun?

Topsun is Top-Seika, a Japanese confectioner that sold Pokemon collectibles with gum from the mid-1990s. It made square peel-and-stick seals in cardboard gum packs, a separate 1997 series of numbered cards printing battle artwork, and a further 1995 card with a statistics table on the front. The company shortened its brand from Topsun to Toppu in the autumn of 1998, so both marks appear across the line.

What is the difference between a Topsun blue back and a green back?

That pairing belongs to the 1995 statistics-table cards, and it is one set in two inks rather than two sets. Four matched pairs of the same number, photographed front and back by one seller, agree on every printed field, and the two backs are the same plate in a different ink. Which ink came first is not proven, so treat the colour as a variant of a card and not a sequence. It is not a variant axis of the 1997 battle cards, which all carry the same green back. On the 1998 stickers the equivalent split is grey border against blue border, which is a front-side difference and a different thing again.

How many Topsun Pokemon cards are there?

At least 151, and this archive will not print 150. One hundred and fifty number-to-name bindings have been read off photographs, and a No.151 Mew on prism stock is photographed at full legibility. No wrapper, box or leaflet printing a total has ever been photographed, so every total in circulation is a seller’s count rather than a printed one. The stickers are counted separately: 102, then 88, then 196, then 152 for the Johto continuation.

Are there Topsun cards with no number?

On the 1995 statistics-table cards, yes, and it is a broad printing-run variant rather than a one-off: the name banner carries no number cell at all and the pink bar runs the full width with the name centred. It has been photographed on several Pokemon and on a block of eight in one lot. On the 1997 battle cards, sellers advertise both no-number and number-error cards and neither has been photographed here, so neither is recorded as existing. If you hold one of those, a photograph of the front and its own back would be the first in this archive.

How do you spot a fake Topsun card?

This archive publishes no counterfeit analysis, so it cannot give you a fake-spotting guide. What it can give you is the internal consistency a genuine card satisfies. Each card prints a classification, a name and its own height and weight, and those three have to agree with each other; the archive ran that self-check on thirty-five rows and it failed none. The known exception is the No.070 error, where the name plate and the number band genuinely disagree on one real card.
