Base Set

Wizards of the Coast launched the Pokemon TCG in English in January 1999, opening the format that would dominate trading-card retail for the next decade. Base Set is the genesis print — 102 cards, four print runs to keep up with demand, and the only window during which the legendary first-edition shadowless Charizard could be pulled from a fresh booster.

The 1st Edition pulled in November 1998 (Japanese) / January 1999 (US) carries a small stamp on the lower left of the artwork box and lacks the drop-shadow under the illustration. Unlimited prints, which followed within months, restore the shadow and drop the stamp. Shadowless without the 1st Ed stamp is a transitional middle run and pulls its own premium.

Sixteen of the 102 cards print in holo. Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Alakazam, Chansey, Clefairy, Gyarados, Hitmonchan, Machamp, Magneton, Mewtwo, Nidoking, Ninetales, Poliwrath, Raindash, Zapdos — the foundation of every vintage chase list. Machamp ships exclusively in the Two-Player Starter Deck in 1st Edition form.

Base Set has been heavily studied for printing variation: missing copyright dates on early 1st Eds, ink-density swings between print runs, and the well-known "no damage" Machamp on early 1st Eds where the Stage 2 line forgot to require evolution. Authenticate carefully; high-grade vintage Base draws aggressive counterfeits.

Three decades into the hobby, raw shadowless and 1st Edition copies in true gem condition are vanishing. Surviving examples almost universally show whitening on the black border. Grading services have populated their pop reports with thousands of low-grade examples, but Mint 9 and Gem Mint 10 numbers stay tight relative to demand.
