Pokemon Topsun cards and stickers explained
Top-Seika, better known as Topsun, sold Pokémon stickers and cards with gum in the 1990s. The shape tells you which one you have.
- Maker
- Top-Seika (Topsun, later Toppu)
- Years
- 1995 to 2000
- Products
- Seals, 1997 cards and 1995 stats cards
Three products, one name
- Seals: 50 mm square stickers with a peel-off back, sold in gum packs from 1997 and into Johto.
- 1997 cards: landscape cards with a metallic band and battle art.
- 1995 cards: portrait cards with a cream border and a stats table on the front.
Check the shape before anything else. It sorts all three.
How many 1997 cards are there?
At least 151, not the 150 most lists show, because a No.151 Mew exists on prism stock. No wrapper printing a total has been found. The prism cards are not simple foil copies: prism No.150 pairs Mewtwo with a different second Pokémon.
Blue back or green back?
This only applies to the 1995 cards. Blue-back and green-back cards are the same set in two ink colours, shown by four matching pairs. Nobody has shown which came first, so treat the colour as a variant.
Topsun or Toppu?
The company shortened its mark to Toppu in autumn 1998. On the 1997 cards the mark changes from card to card, so it does not split them into two sets.
Error cards
One error is confirmed: No.070 prints Weepinbell’s number and classification on an otherwise normal Bellsprout. Three other claimed errors have not been confirmed.
Quick answers
What is Pokémon Topsun?
Topsun is Top-Seika, a Japanese sweets company that sold Pokémon stickers and cards with gum in the 1990s. It shortened its brand to Toppu in autumn 1998, so both names appear on the line.
How many Topsun Pokémon cards are there?
At least 151 in the 1997 card series, because a No.151 Mew exists. The sticker sets are counted separately: 102, then 88, then 196, then 152 for Johto.
Are there Topsun cards with no number?
Yes, on the 1995 stats cards: some have no number box in the name banner. No-number 1997 cards are advertised by sellers but have not been confirmed.
What is the difference between a blue back and a green back?
It applies to the 1995 stats cards only. They are the same set printed in two ink colours, and nobody has shown which came first.
