GBA Card Collection 2 - Ruby and Sapphire

2003 / Game Boy Advance
Set Notes

The second Hoenn-era GBA Card Collection. Thirty eight designs are now documented. This set numbers neither of its faces. The fronts print a romaji name band and no number, and ten of its backs have now been read, every one of them printing the katakana name alone in the blue name band with no number line and no digits, beside the species classification, the HP, the height and the weight. So an unnumbered row is the correct published form here rather than a gap, and a number is never written onto one from a dex. Numbered backs are a Part I feature, so their absence is positive Part II evidence rather than missing evidence. Every design published here is read off a card photographed in the same frame as a box whose foot band prints the numeral II, because the foot band is the Part test for this family and the ground colour never is. Part II now has a printed total and a closed box census. The gashapon leaflet packed with its boxes was photographed on 2026-09-12, in one frame beside the Part III leaflet, and under the heading GBA CARD COLLECTION PART II it prints four body colours, 140 card designs covering 136 characters, and four box types. Its thirteen digit article number 4947122040117 validates on its own check digit, which rules out a single digit misread anywhere in the first twelve, and the maker printed on it is Kyodo Co., Ltd. of Sumida-ku, Tokyo. The 140 over 136 is the first time this family has printed a design count and a character count on one line, and it settles what these totals mean, because a part can print more designs than it has characters, so a design total is never a species total and the 84 on Part I carries the same caution. Four Part II box artworks are now photographed, a Plusle and Minun box, a Latias box, a Jirachi box and a Rayquaza box read off its own foot band, which closes the census against the four box types the leaflet prints. The same leaflet carries a toy safety mark reading ST 04, which by the issuing association's own definition reads as a 2004 inspection year against the 2003 in this set's key, and the Part III leaflet carries the same mark, so that is recorded as an open question and neither set is renamed on a date read alone. One further front from the same capsule is a silver prism whose name band throws glare in every photograph of it, and no species is written for it. The design boundary that was open here is now settled by the name band itself. Every front in this family prints its name in one heavy block capital letterform, in a band that runs down the right edge, and what separates the parts is the ink rather than the lettering. A Part II front prints the name in a colour with no outline, a Part III front prints it in white inside a thick black outline, and neither treatment changes with the background or with the finish, so the treatment belongs to the product and never to the individual card. A name printed along the bottom edge instead belongs to a different product and is never counted here. The thirty designs published here before this pass were each checked against that test on a photograph taken flat on, because a raking angle can wash a dark band toward white and manufacture an outline the card does not print. That failure runs one way only, from a coloured band toward an apparent white one, so a coloured reading with no outline is never its artefact, and the eight designs added since all read coloured with no outline, six of them on a flat on frame and two on the raking angle frame of the same lot, where that reading cannot be manufactured. The Geodude row this page already carried is confirmed by the test rather than contradicted, because the card in this set prints its name in yellow with no outline, while the white outlined card of the same species in one large mixed lot carries its name along the bottom edge and belongs to that other product. Whether that species also appears in Part III is untested and is claimed here neither way. The eight designs added since come from one lot of ninety one fronts read card by card, and the box in that lot is the first Part II box this archive has read off its own foot band rather than carried in from another lot, because one frame shows it square on printing the numeral II and the line GBA CARD COLLECTION PART II. One of the eight is Rhydon, a subject an earlier pass declined to publish after correcting the reading that produced it. That correction stands, because the card behind it prints SIHORN and is Rhyhorn, but this lot prints a separate SIDON card in blue with no outline, so Rhydon enters on a read of its own rather than on the corrected one. Rhyhorn and Rhydon are one evolutionary line split between the parts, with Rhydon here and Rhyhorn in Part III read in the same lot on the same pass, and five subjects listed here are listed in Part III as well on different cards, which is why nothing in this family is ever assigned by species. One published field was re-examined and none moved. The Seaking front band resolves as AZUMAU where an earlier sweep recorded AZUMAOU, and because no row here carries a romaji name and that row rests on its back read, the difference reaches no published field and is left open rather than settled by preference.

Only source-verified entries are named. Additional designs can be submitted using Add Extra Card; each keeps its own front and back photo keys.
